Studio J (a division of the Joliet Drama Guild) announced earlier this year that its inaugural production would be The Pillowman – a Tony and Olivier award-winning dark comedy by Martin McDonagh. The play follows Katurian, a writer, who is interrogated by the secret police of an unnamed authoritarian regime. It seems his stories have some strange links to a series of local crimes in the area, and as the horrific plot unwinds, the audience gets drawn into the powerful effects of Katurian’s stories and his disturbing past.
Martin McDonagh, an English playwright, is well-known for his biting and dark comedies. Often criticized for the effects of his stories on audiences, The Pillowman showcases McDonagh’s notion of how audiences receive stories and what those stories mean to its author. McDonagh’s other plays include The Beauty Queen of Leenane and The Lieutenant of Inishmore.
Studio J branched off from the main stage Joliet Drama Guild productions as a way of bringing new and challenging works to the Joliet area, and The Pillowman fits this bill to perfection. Drawing its cast from local actors, the production displays a truly talented group who bring these characters to life. Directed by Allen Pindell, the cast consists of Bill Griffith (Katurian), Anthony Roach (Tupolski), Mike Sansone (Ariel), Frank Hattula (Michal), Annie Roach (Mother), RJ Torres (Father), Devon Ford (Boy/Girl), and Mackenzie Griffith (Maria).
